Setup, Compatibility & Care
Achieving the best results with Zinsser Allcoat Exterior requires proper preparation and application.
Setup & Surface Preparation:
- Clean: Ensure all surfaces are clean, dry, and free from loose material, dirt, dust, grease, wax, and fungal growth. Use a suitable fungicidal wash if mould or algae are present.
- Repair: Fill any cracks, holes, or imperfections with an appropriate exterior filler. Allow to dry completely and sand smooth.
- Abrade: For glossy or previously painted surfaces, lightly abrade with fine-grit sandpaper to create a 'key' for better adhesion. Remove all sanding dust.
- Prime (Optional): While Zinsser Allcoat is self-priming on most surfaces, highly porous surfaces or those stained with tannin (like some woods) may benefit from a dedicated primer to ensure optimal coverage and performance.
Application:
- Tools: Apply using a good quality synthetic brush, roller, or spray equipment. Stir the paint thoroughly before and during use.
- Coats: Apply two full, even coats. For best results, do not apply too thickly.
- Drying: Allow approximately 1 hour between coats. Ensure the first coat is dry to the touch before applying the second.
- Conditions: Apply in dry conditions when the ambient temperature is between 10°C and 32°C. Avoid applying in direct sunlight or if rain is imminent.
Compatibility:
- Zinsser Allcoat Exterior is compatible with most sound, previously painted or new exterior surfaces, including wood, metal, masonry, plastic, concrete, and cladding.
- Always test a small, inconspicuous area first for adhesion and compatibility, especially on unusual or unknown substrates.
Care & Maintenance:
- Cleaning Painted Surfaces: For routine cleaning, gently wipe painted surfaces with a soft, damp cloth and a mild, non-abrasive detergent.
- Tool Cleaning: Clean brushes, rollers, and other equipment immediately after use with warm, soapy water.
- Storage: Store unused paint in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and frost. Ensure the lid is tightly sealed.
