Full details

The Merrell Moab Speed 2 Leather Waterproof Hiking Shoes in UK 10.5 are designed for adult males seeking a durable and comfortable option for hiking and rugged trails. Their key benefit is the fusion of legendary Moab DNA with modern athletic performance, offering a lightweight yet stable feel with excellent traction and waterproofing. A potential caveat is that while engineered for speed, they still represent a robust hiking shoe, so users expecting an ultra-lightweight athletic shoe might need to adjust expectations.

FAQs

Are these shoes suitable for everyday wear or just hiking?

While engineered for hiking and rugged trails, their comfortable cushioning and durable construction also make them suitable for extended periods of walking or casual wear if desired.

How do I know if I have the right size?

Ensure there is about a finger's width of space between your longest toe and the front of the shoe when standing. Your heel should feel secure and not lift excessively when walking.

Can I machine wash these hiking shoes?

No, machine washing is not recommended as it can damage the materials, adhesives, and waterproof membrane. Hand wash with a soft brush and mild soap if necessary, and allow to air dry.

What is the advantage of the Vibram® TC5+ outsole?

The Vibram® TC5+ outsole is known for providing exceptional grip and durability across a wide range of terrains and conditions, offering reliable traction on both wet and dry surfaces.

How long does the waterproofing typically last?

The waterproof membrane is designed for durability. However, its effectiveness can be prolonged by proper care, cleaning, and periodic reapplication of appropriate waterproofing treatments to the leather exterior.

What does the 'Moab Speed 2' in the name signify?

'Moab' refers to the line's heritage inspired by the iconic trails of Moab, Utah. 'Speed 2' indicates this is the second generation of the Moab Speed, emphasizing a blend of lightweight performance with the durability and comfort the Moab line is known for.

What is the heel-to-toe drop, and why is it important?

The 10mm heel-to-toe drop refers to the difference in height between the heel and the forefoot. A moderate drop like this can promote a more natural foot strike and efficient stride for many hikers.

Troubleshooting

Water seeping into shoes

Ensure laces are fully tightened. Check for damage to the waterproof membrane or stitching. Reapply waterproofing treatment to the leather upper.

Reduced traction on slippery surfaces

Clean the Vibram® TC5+ outsole to remove embedded debris. Inspect the tread for excessive wear; consider replacement if significantly worn.

Discomfort or blisters during wear

Ensure proper lacing technique. Allow for a sufficient break-in period. Consider using thicker or different types of hiking socks.

Shoes feel stiff or rigid

Continue with the break-in period. Use a leather conditioner designed for hiking footwear to soften the material.

Setup, Compatibility & Care

Setup:

These hiking shoes require no specific setup. Upon receiving them, it is recommended to try them on to ensure a proper fit. For optimal comfort, especially if new to leather footwear, a short break-in period on shorter walks is advised.

Compatibility:

Designed for use with standard hiking socks. The shoes are compatible with various trail types, from well-maintained paths to rugged, off-trail environments. They integrate well with typical outdoor gear.

Care Instructions:

  • Cleaning: After use, remove loose dirt and mud with a soft brush or dry cloth. For tougher grime, use a damp cloth. Avoid harsh detergents or abrasive cleaners.
  • Waterproofing Maintenance: Periodically apply a leather waterproofing treatment designed for hiking boots to maintain the membrane's effectiveness and the leather's condition.
  • Drying: If the shoes become wet, stuff them with newspaper to absorb moisture and allow them to air dry naturally at room temperature. Avoid direct heat sources like radiators or fires, which can damage the leather and adhesives.
  • Storage: Store in a cool, dry place when not in use, away from direct sunlight.
