Full details
The HOKA Mafate X is designed for adult trail runners, gravel grinders, and ultra-marathoners seeking maximum cushioning and propulsion on long, demanding courses. FAQs
Who is the HOKA Mafate X best suited for?
The Mafate X is ideal for adult trail runners, ultra-marathoners, and those who tackle long distances on challenging terrain. It’s built for maximum cushioning and propulsion during extended efforts.
What is the main advantage of the carbon fibre plate?
The carbon fibre plate provides a responsive feel and enhances energy return, helping to propel you forward more efficiently during each stride, especially during take-offs.
How does the Vibram Megagrip outsole perform?
The Vibram Megagrip outsole offers exceptional traction on a wide variety of surfaces, including wet rock and mud, maximizing ground contact and stability on uneven trails.
Is the woven upper durable enough for rough trails?
Yes, the ultralight woven upper is designed to be breathable and allow for easy drainage while still providing a secure foothold and durability for trail use. The rubber toe cap adds extra protection.
Can I use these for everyday running or road running?
While they offer superior cushioning, the Mafate X is optimized for trails. The aggressive outsole and plush cushioning might feel unnecessary or less efficient for regular road running or shorter, faster training sessions.
How do I clean and care for my Mafate X trainers?
Clean with cold water and mild soap using a soft brush or cloth. Allow to air dry naturally and store in a cool, dry place. Avoid machine washing or high heat.
What is the primary benefit of the dual-density midsole?
The dual-density midsole combines a plush foam chassis with a PEBA top layer to deliver exceptional shock absorption for landings and a cushioned, supportive feel throughout long runs.
Troubleshooting
Reduced cushioning or responsiveness
Over time, cushioning can compress. Ensure the carbon fibre plate is not obstructed. For significant degradation, consider replacement.
Poor traction on wet surfaces
The Vibram Megagrip outsole is designed for grip, but wear and tear can reduce its effectiveness. Clean the outsole to remove packed-in debris. If wear is significant, it may be time for replacement.
Upper feels loose or lacks support
Adjust lacing to provide a more secure fit. Ensure the laces are tied properly. The woven upper is designed to be breathable, so a slightly less snug feel is normal compared to traditional materials.
Water drainage is slow
Ensure the mesh vents are clear of debris. Prolonged submersion can naturally slow drainage. Minor obstructions can be cleared with a gentle rinse.

Setup, Compatibility & Care
Setup: The HOKA Mafate X trainers are ready to use straight out of the box. Ensure they fit comfortably and lace them appropriately for your preferred level of support before your first run.
Compatibility: These trainers are designed for men and are suitable for adult foot sizes, specifically in UK sizing. They are best suited for trail running, gravel grinding, and ultra-marathon distances.
Care: To maintain the performance and longevity of your Mafate X trainers:
- Cleaning: After each use, brush off loose dirt and mud. For a deeper clean, use a soft brush or cloth with cold water and mild soap. Avoid machine washing or using harsh detergents.
- Drying: Allow the shoes to air dry naturally at room temperature. Do not place them near direct heat sources like radiators or in direct sunlight, as this can damage the materials.
- Storage: Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight when not in use.
