FAQs
Are the Merrell Agility Peak 5 GTX suitable for road running?
While they offer significant cushioning, the Agility Peak 5 GTX is optimized for trail running with an aggressive outsole pattern for grip on uneven terrain. They are not ideal for sustained road running, as the tread can wear down quickly and the cushioning is designed for softer surfaces.
How do I know if my size is correct?
Ensure there is a thumb's width of space between your longest toe and the front of the shoe when standing. Your heel should feel secure with minimal slippage when walking. It's recommended to try them on at the end of the day when your feet are slightly swollen.
How long does the GORE-TEX waterproofing last?
The GORE-TEX membrane is highly durable. With proper care and cleaning, the waterproof and breathable properties can last for the expected lifespan of the shoe. Avoid using fabric softeners or bleach, and always allow the shoes to air dry.
Can I replace the insoles?
Yes, the insoles are typically removable and can be replaced with custom orthotics or alternative insoles if desired, provided they are of a similar thickness to maintain a proper fit.
What is the primary difference between this and previous Agility Peak models?
The Agility Peak 5 GTX features an increased rocker for a smoother stride, reduced overall weight, and a newly sculpted heel cup for improved comfort and reduced slippage compared to previous versions.
Are these shoes good for hiking as well as running?
Yes, the Agility Peak 5 GTX provides excellent cushioning and support, making them a very capable shoe for hiking, especially on trails where waterproof protection and reliable grip are beneficial.
Troubleshooting
Feet feel wet despite GORE-TEX
Check for breaches in the GORE-TEX membrane due to damage or improper cleaning. Ensure laces and tongue are properly secured to prevent water ingress from the top. Condensation can also feel like wetness; ensure adequate ventilation during warmer runs.
Heel slippage during runs
Ensure the laces are tied securely, utilizing the lacing system to achieve a snug fit around the ankle. The sculpted heel cup is designed to minimize slip; verify the shoe size is correct and that the heel counter is functioning as intended.
Reduced grip on wet surfaces
The outsole is designed for trail traction. On extremely slick surfaces like wet rocks or mud, reduced grip is possible. Ensure the outsole is clean, as mud or debris can impede traction. For very specific conditions, consider alternative footwear designed for those exact surfaces.
Discomfort or hot spots
Break in the shoes gradually with shorter runs. Adjust lacing techniques to alleviate pressure points. Ensure the socks you are using are appropriate for trail running and provide adequate cushioning and moisture-wicking.

Setup, Compatibility & Care
Setup:
These trainers are ready to wear right out of the box. Ensure they fit snugly but comfortably before your first run.
Compatibility:
The Agility Peak 5 GTX is designed for trail running and hiking. It is compatible with most standard trail running socks. The gaiter D-ring allows for attachment of compatible gaiters for added protection against debris.
Care:
- Cleaning: After use, clean the shoes by removing loose dirt with a brush. For deeper cleaning, use a damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid machine washing or using harsh detergents, as this can damage the materials and waterproof membrane.
- Drying: Allow shoes to air dry naturally at room temperature. Do not place them near direct heat sources like radiators or fires, as this can degrade the materials. Stuffing them with newspaper can help absorb moisture and maintain shape during drying.
- Waterproofing Maintenance: To maintain the GORE-TEX membrane's performance, follow manufacturer guidelines for cleaning and care. Periodically, you may consider using a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) treatment designed for waterproof footwear.
