FAQs

What size hook should I use?

The Fulling Mill Wickhams Fancy Winged Dry Fly is available in sizes 14 and 16. Choose the size that best matches the natural insects in the water.

What type of water is this fly best suited for?

This fly is best suited for rivers and streams where trout are feeding on emerging insects, such as olives or caddis.

How do I ensure a drag-free drift?

Cast upstream or up and across. Mend your line to remove any slack, and allow the fly to float naturally with the current.

How often should I replace the fly?

Replace the fly when it becomes damaged or loses its effectiveness, which can happen after catching multiple fish or repeated use.

Can I use this fly in still water?

While primarily designed for moving water, it can be effective in still water if the conditions are right and insects are hatching.

How should I store the flies?

Store the flies in a dry fly box, away from direct sunlight.

Troubleshooting

Fly not floating properly.

Apply floatant to the fly before each use to ensure it floats correctly.

Fish not taking the fly.

Adjust the fly size or try a different pattern if the natural insects are a different size or color. Check your leader and tippet for visibility.
