FAQs

What size hook should I use?

The Fulling Mill Bibio Sedgehog Hackled Wet Fly comes in sizes 10 and 12. Choose the size that best matches the insects you are trying to imitate.

What type of water is this fly best for?

This fly works best in moving water or choppy conditions where a surface disturbance attracts fish. Lakes, rivers, and streams are all suitable environments.

How do I maintain the fly?

Rinse the fly with fresh water after each use. Store it in a fly box to prevent damage.

How should I retrieve the fly?

Experiment with different retrieves. A steady retrieve, or short twitches can be effective, depending on what the fish respond to.

What is the best type of fishing line to use with this fly?

Use a floating line to ensure the fly stays on the surface.

Can I use this fly in still water?

While the fly is designed to work in choppier water, it can still attract fish in still water. However, it might be less effective than in moving water or windy conditions.

What kind of fish can I catch with this fly?

This fly is effective for attracting trout and other surface-feeding fish.

Troubleshooting

Fly not floating properly.

Ensure the fly is completely dry. Apply floatant if necessary. Check for any damage or fouling of the fly's hackle.

Not getting any strikes.

Try changing the size of the fly or the retrieve style. The fish might be feeding at a different depth, so consider using a different fly.

Fly getting tangled.

Check your leader for any twists or tangles. Use a tippet material that is appropriate for the conditions.

  • Requires specific conditions to maximize its effectiveness.

Setup, Compatibility & Care

  1. Attaching the Fly: Tie the fly to your tippet using a reliable knot such as a clinch knot or a loop knot. Ensure a secure connection to prevent losing the fly during a strike.
  2. Line and Leader: Use a leader appropriate for surface fishing. A floating line is recommended to keep the fly on the surface. Adjust the leader length based on the water conditions.
  3. Casting: Cast the fly upstream or across the current. The objective is to let the fly drift naturally while creating a wake.
  4. Retrieval: Vary your retrieval speed to see what works best. Short twitches or a steady retrieve can be effective depending on the conditions.
  5. Care: Rinse the fly with fresh water after each use to remove any salt or debris. Store the fly in a fly box to protect it from damage and to prevent the hooks from tangling.
