Add elegance and height to your pond with Butomus umbellatus, commonly known as flowering rush. This striking marginal plant produces tall, upright stems topped with umbels of star-shaped pink flowers that bloom throughout summer. Its narrow, arching leaves form graceful clumps at the water’s edge, offering strong vertical interest and soft movement in the breeze. Best grown in full sun, Butomus umbellatus thrives in shallow water or permanently wet soil, making it ideal for planting in baskets at the pond margin or in bog gardens. It prefers still or slow-moving water and performs well in nutrient-rich conditions. Fully hardy and easy to establish, this perennial dies back in winter and returns each spring with fresh growth and flower stems. Over time, it will form dense clumps but is not aggressive, making it suitable for both formal and wildlife ponds. A UK native species, flowering rush is highly beneficial for pond biodiversity, providing nectar for pollinators and habitat for aquatic life while adding a bold, ornamental presence.
