Bog Cotton (Eriophorum angustifolium) is an essential addition for pond enthusiasts and nature gardeners who want to enhance the visual appeal and ecological health of their water features. This hardy perennial is ideal for those with marshy ground or shallow pond shelves, providing a unique aesthetic with its signature white, cotton-like seed heads throughout the summer. While it is a highly effective natural water filter, potential owners should note that it requires consistently damp conditions and may not thrive in dry, traditional soil environments.

It is best suited for shallow water or boggy margins. Keep the crown of the plant near the water surface, ideally no deeper than 5-10cm.
Yes, Eriophorum angustifolium thrives in full sun, which encourages the best development of its characteristic cotton-like blooms.
Yes, it is a non-toxic, native-style plant that provides excellent cover and natural filtration, making it safe and beneficial for fish ponds.
Bog Cotton typically produces its striking white blooms during the summer months.
You can plant it directly in the ground only if the site is a permanent bog, marsh, or consistently wet area that never dries out.
Check the water level. Bog Cotton must be kept in damp or shallow water; if the soil has dried out, the plant will quickly dehydrate.
Ensure you are using specialized aquatic compost rather than standard garden soil, which contains nutrients that feed algae.
To establish your Bog Cotton, simply remove it from the 9cm nursery pot and transplant it into a pond-specific aquatic basket filled with heavy loam-based aquatic compost. Avoid using potting soil with added fertilizers, as this can encourage algae bloom in the pond. Top the basket with a layer of gravel to keep the soil in place. Once submerged on a pond shelf, the plant requires minimal maintenance other than trimming back dead foliage in the late autumn to keep the water clear. Ensure the plant is never allowed to dry out, as its native habitat is naturally saturated or submerged.
