Full details
The Fox Racing Defend 3-Layer Water Jacket is a high-performance outer shell designed for mountain bikers who refuse to let wet weather dictate their ride schedule. This jacket offers superior protection against the elements, making it ideal for serious trail riders needing reliable gear, though its robust 3-layer construction can feel slightly bulkier than minimalist windbreakers when stowed away.

FAQs
Can I wear this jacket for non-cycling activities?
While designed for mountain biking, its durable, waterproof build makes it suitable for hiking or other outdoor activities in heavy rain.
Does the hood fit over my helmet?
The jacket is designed for the hood to fit under your helmet for the most effective weather seal, rather than over it.
How do I maintain the waterproof performance?
Keep the jacket clean of mud and debris, as dirt can clog the fabric pores. Use technical detergents and re-apply DWR periodically.
Are the pockets waterproof?
The pockets use waterproof zippers, but they are not fully submersible; it is best to keep sensitive electronics in a dry bag inside the pocket.
What is the fit like?
It features an athletic, trail-oriented fit that allows for base layers underneath without being overly baggy.
Troubleshooting
Water is soaking into the fabric rather than beading up.
The DWR (Durable Water Repellent) coating has likely worn off. Wash the jacket and re-apply a DWR treatment spray.
Condensation building up inside the jacket during a ride.
Ensure your underarm vents are opened early during high-exertion sections to allow moisture vapor to escape.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Excellent waterproofing with fully-taped seams
- Reinforced panels in high-wear areas for trail longevity
- Underarm vents provide necessary airflow
- Versatile hood fits comfortably under helmets
- Effective DWR coating keeps mud and debris from soaking in
Cons
- More substantial weight than ultra-light shells
- Fit may be too large for casual use compared to cycling-specific athletic cut
- Requires proper care to maintain the DWR finish
Setup, Compatibility & Care
To ensure your jacket continues to perform, start by adjusting the cuff closures to fit snugly over your gloves or wrists to prevent water ingress. When wearing the hood, adjust the fit once your helmet is on to ensure full range of motion.
Care Instructions:
- Cleaning: Wash in cold water on a gentle cycle. Use a technical detergent designed for waterproof gear.
- Drying: Air dry whenever possible to protect the waterproof membrane.
- Maintenance: Periodically re-apply a DWR spray if you notice water no longer 'beads up' on the surface of the fabric. This restores the jacket's ability to shed water efficiently.
