Setup, Compatibility & Care Instructions
Setup
- Choose Location: Select a level area in your garden, ideally with partial shade to reduce excessive algae growth.
- Mark Outline: Place the pond kit in the desired position and carefully mark its perimeter on the ground.
- Excavate Hole: Dig a hole slightly larger than the pond's dimensions, ensuring it is deep enough for the pond's full depth, plus a few inches for sand or soft soil at the bottom.
- Level Base: Add a 1-2 inch layer of sand or soft soil to the bottom of the hole and level it thoroughly. This prevents sharp objects from damaging the pond and helps with final leveling.
- Position Pond: Carefully place the pond kit into the excavated hole. Use a spirit level across the pond's rim to ensure it is perfectly level in all directions. Adjust the sand/soil underneath as needed.
- Backfill: Begin to slowly fill the pond with water while simultaneously backfilling the space around the pond with sand or soil. This equalizes pressure and prevents the pond from deforming. Tamp the backfill gently.
- Final Fill: Once backfilling is complete, fill the pond completely with water. Allow it to settle for a few days before introducing plants or fish.
Compatibility
This pond is compatible with various small pond accessories, including small fountain pumps, filters, and aquatic lighting. It integrates well into rockeries, paved areas, or planted borders. For a complete ecosystem, consider adding specific aquatic plants suitable for small ponds and appropriate fish species. It is designed for in-ground installation and is not typically recommended for standalone, above-ground use without significant structural support.
Care
- Water Quality: Regularly test water parameters (pH, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate) if keeping fish. Use de-chlorinator for tap water.
- Cleaning: Periodically remove leaves and debris with a pond net. Consider a pond vacuum for deeper cleaning if sediment builds up. Drain and clean thoroughly once a year (typically in spring or autumn).
- Algae Control: Manage algae by introducing aquatic plants for shade and nutrient absorption, maintaining good water circulation, and using safe pond treatments if necessary.
- Winterization: In freezing climates, remove any pumps or filtration equipment before the first frost. If leaving water in, consider adding a pond heater or de-icer to prevent the pond from freezing solid, which can stress fish or damage the pond structure.
