Setup, Compatibility & Care
First-Time Setup
- Sizing: The most critical step is ensuring the correct fit. Red Wing Iron Ranger boots typically run large. It is generally recommended to size down by half a size to a full size from your usual shoe size. Try them on with the type of socks you plan to wear to ensure adequate space without excessive movement.
- Break-In: Be prepared for a break-in period. The stiff leather will gradually soften and mold to your feet. Wear them for short periods initially and gradually increase wear time to ease into the process.
Compatibility
- Socks: For comfort during the break-in period and beyond, wear medium-to-thick socks made of wool or a cotton blend to help manage moisture and provide cushioning.
- Attire: These versatile boots pair well with a wide range of casual and workwear outfits, including denim jeans, canvas trousers, and various jacket styles.
Care & Maintenance
To ensure your Red Wing Iron Ranger boots last a lifetime, proper care is essential:
- Cleaning: After use, especially if dirty, wipe down the leather with a damp cloth to remove surface dirt. For stubborn dirt, use a dedicated leather cleaner sparingly.
- Conditioning: Apply a high-quality leather conditioner (e.g., Red Wing's All Natural Leather Conditioner or Mink Oil) every 3-6 months, or as needed, to keep the leather supple and prevent drying and cracking. Ensure the boots are clean before conditioning.
- Water Protection: While the leather offers some natural water resistance, consider applying a waterproof spray or wax for enhanced protection in wet conditions.
- Storage: Store your boots in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight or heat sources. Use cedar shoe trees to help absorb moisture and maintain the boot's shape.
- Resoling: Thanks to their Goodyear welt construction, these boots can be resoled. When the outsole shows significant wear, consult a professional cobbler for resoling to extend the life of your boots.
