Setup, Compatibility & Care
Getting the most out of your Trespass Tilbury Waterproof Jacket involves understanding its fit, how to layer with it, and proper maintenance.
Initial Setup & Adjustment
Upon receiving your jacket, take a moment to adjust its various features for optimal comfort and protection:
- Hood Adjustment: If deployed, use any drawstrings or togg to cinch the hood around your face for a secure fit against wind and rain. Practice packing it away to familiarize yourself with the process.
- Cuff Adjustment: Utilize the adjustable fasteners on the cuffs (often hook-and-loop straps) to create a snug seal around your wrists, preventing drafts and water ingress.
- Hem Adjustment: If your jacket has a drawcord at the hem, adjust it to seal out drafts from below and create a more personalized fit.
Compatibility & Layering
This jacket is a protective outer shell, meaning its performance is enhanced by proper layering underneath, depending on the temperature:
- Warm Weather: Wear directly over a lightweight base layer or t-shirt for rain and wind protection without added warmth.
- Cool Weather: Combine with a moisture-wicking base layer and a mid-layer fleece or insulated vest for added warmth while maintaining breathability.
- Cold Weather: For colder conditions, consider a heavier fleece or a thin, packable insulated jacket as a mid-layer. The Tilbury jacket will then act as your essential waterproof and windproof barrier.
Care & Maintenance
Proper care will extend the life and maintain the performance of your waterproof jacket:
- Read the Label: Always check the specific care instructions on the jacket's inner label first.
- Pre-Wash: Brush off any loose dirt or mud. Close all zippers and fasteners, including pocket zips and main front zip.
- Washing: Machine wash on a gentle cycle in cool water (typically 30°C or 86°F) using a technical outerwear cleaner, or a small amount of mild liquid detergent. Avoid powder detergents, bleach, and fabric softeners, as these can clog the fabric's pores and impair waterproofing/breathability.
- Rinsing: Ensure the jacket is thoroughly rinsed to remove all detergent residues.
- Drying: Hang to air dry, ideally away from direct sunlight or intense heat. Some jackets can be tumble dried on a very low heat setting, which can reactivate the durable water repellent (DWR) finish – check your specific care label. Avoid high heat.
- Re-Proofing: Over time, the DWR finish that causes water to bead up will wear off. If water starts to soak into the fabric instead of beading, it's time to re-proof. Use a spray-on or wash-in DWR treatment specifically designed for waterproof breathable fabrics.
