FAQs

What is the best way to present this fly?

A drag-free drift is usually best, allowing the fly to mimic a natural insect.

What tippet size should I use?

Use a tippet between 4X and 6X, depending on the conditions and the size of the fish.

Can I use this fly in rivers?

Yes, it is effective in slow currents and eddies in rivers and streams.

How often should I reapply floatant?

Reapply floatant as needed, especially if the fly starts to sink or show signs of being waterlogged.

What type of water is this fly best for?

This fly works well in both stillwater and moving water environments where midges are present.

How do I know if this fly is the right size?

Observe the natural midge activity on the water to see if the size 14 matches the local hatch.

Troubleshooting

Fly is not floating properly.

Apply a dry fly desiccant or floatant to the CDC wing to increase buoyancy.

Fish are ignoring the fly.

Try different retrieve speeds, adjust the depth of presentation, or switch to a different fly size or pattern if the hatch doesn't seem to match.

Fly gets waterlogged.

Dry the fly thoroughly between uses and consider using a CDC-specific floatant.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Highly effective at imitating midges.
  • CDC wing provides excellent floatation and movement.
  • Durable construction ensures longevity.
  • Versatile fly suitable for various water conditions.
  • Size 14 is a common and productive size for many locations.

Cons

  • Requires some experience in fly presentation.
  • Effectiveness may vary depending on local midge hatches.
  • Can be delicate if not handled carefully.

Setup, Compatibility & Care

  • Leader: Use a fine tippet (4X to 6X) for a natural presentation. The lighter tippet allows the fly to move naturally and reduces the chances of spooking fish.
  • Knot: Tie the fly securely using a reliable knot like the improved clinch knot or a loop knot for better movement.
  • Casting: Use a delicate presentation to avoid spooking fish, especially in clear water.
  • Care: After use, rinse the fly with fresh water to remove any debris and extend its life. Store the fly in a dry fly box.
