Full details

The Brother MFC-J6960DW is a professional 4-in-1 color inkjet multifunction printer designed for small to medium businesses requiring A3 printing capabilities. Its key benefit is high-speed, duplex printing and scanning up to A3, alongside versatile connectivity options. A potential caveat is its larger footprint compared to A4-only devices. This printer offers color printing, copying, scanning, and faxing, featuring dual paper trays for increased capacity, an automatic document feeder (ADF) for efficient multi-page tasks, and robust network connectivity.

Troubleshooting

Printer is not printing

Check that the printer is powered on and connected to the network. Verify that the correct printer is selected in your print job. Ensure there are no error messages on the printer's display. Check ink levels and clear any paper jams.

Poor print quality (streaks, faded colors)

Run the print head cleaning utility from the printer's menu. Check ink cartridge levels. Ensure you are using the correct paper type and settings for your print job. For severe issues, a head alignment may be necessary.

Paper jam occurs frequently

Ensure paper is loaded correctly in the trays and is not creased or damaged. Do not overload the trays. Check for any small pieces of torn paper inside the printer. Clean the paper feed rollers if they appear dirty.

Wi-Fi connection is unstable

Ensure the printer is within range of your Wi-Fi router. Restart both the printer and your router. Re-enter the Wi-Fi password on the printer if necessary. Check for interference from other electronic devices.

ADF is not feeding paper correctly

Ensure documents are placed correctly in the ADF and are not creased or stapled. Clean the ADF rollers with a slightly damp, lint-free cloth. Check the document settings on the printer's display.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Handles A3 documents for versatile printing needs.
  • Fast print and scan speeds (up to 31 ipm).
  • Automatic duplex printing saves time and paper.
  • High paper input capacity with dual trays (500 sheets total).
  • Integrated 50-sheet Automatic Document Feeder for efficient scanning and copying.
  • Multiple connectivity options including Ethernet and Wi-Fi.

Cons

  • Larger physical footprint suitable for dedicated office space.
  • Inkjet technology may have higher running costs for very high-volume black and white printing compared to laser.
  • Maximum copy resolution of 1200 x 4800 DPI, while good, may not meet specialized professional graphic needs.
  • Recommended monthly duty cycle of up to 2500 pages means it's best suited for moderate to heavy office use, not extreme high-volume industrial printing.

Setup, Compatibility & Care

Setup:

  1. Unpack the printer and remove all protective tapes and packaging materials.
  2. Install the included ink cartridges following the on-screen prompts or user guide instructions.
  3. Load paper into the dual paper trays or the multi-purpose tray. Ensure paper is loaded correctly and is within the supported weight range (64-220 g/m² for trays, 64-220 g/m² for MP tray).
  4. Connect the printer to your network using the Ethernet cable or by following the Wi-Fi setup wizard on the touchscreen.
  5. Install the necessary drivers and software on your computers. Use the provided CD or download the latest versions from the Brother support website.

Care:

  • Cleaning: Regularly wipe the exterior with a soft, damp cloth. Clean the scanner glass with a lint-free cloth. For print head cleaning, use the built-in utility via the printer's menu to maintain print quality.
  • Ink Replacement: Replace ink cartridges when prompted. Use genuine Brother ink to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
  • Firmware Updates: Periodically check for firmware updates via the printer's settings menu or the Brother support website to ensure the latest features and security patches are installed.
