FAQs
Are these shoes suitable for marathons?
The Downshifter 14 is best suited for daily training and casual runs rather than long-distance competitive marathons.
Can I wash these in a washing machine?
It is not recommended. Machine washing can damage the foam and adhesives; hand cleaning is the best way to extend the life of the shoe.
Are they true to size?
Yes, they generally follow standard Nike sizing. If you prefer a wider fit for thicker socks, consider half a size up.
Are they waterproof?
No, they feature breathable mesh designed for air circulation, so they are not waterproof.
Can I use them for court sports like basketball?
These are designed for running and gym training; they do not provide the specialized ankle support needed for high-impact court sports.
Troubleshooting
Feeling discomfort or hot spots during a run
Adjust the lacing pattern to relieve pressure points or ensure you are wearing moisture-wicking athletic socks.
Outer sole losing traction
Clean the soles to remove built-up debris and mud which can impede the grip pattern; check for excessive tread wear.
Accumulated dirt on upper mesh
Gently scrub with a soft brush and mild soapy water, then air dry thoroughly.
Pros and Cons
Pros

- Highly breathable upper keeps feet comfortable
- Effective shock absorption during runs
- Durable outsole provides reliable traction
- Versatile design suitable for varied training
Cons
- Not specifically designed for technical trail terrain
- May lack the high-end stability features needed for severe overpronation
- Limited to road and gym surfaces
Setup, Compatibility & Care
To ensure your Nike Downshifter 14 trainers last through many miles, follow these maintenance tips:
- Fit Check: Ensure the shoe is laced snugly but not too tight; the upper material should conform to your foot shape naturally.
- Cleaning: Hand wash the shoes using mild soap and cool water. Use a soft-bristled brush to remove dirt from the mesh and sole.
- Drying: Always air dry at room temperature. Avoid direct heat sources like radiators or sunlight, as this can degrade the cushioning foam and synthetic materials.
- Storage: Keep in a dry, well-ventilated area to prevent odors and material deterioration.
