Setup, Compatibility & Care
For the best results, plant your onion sets into fertile, well-drained soil in a sunny position. Avoid areas that stay waterlogged, as this can cause the bulbs to rot during wet winter spells. If your soil is heavy clay, incorporate organic matter or grit to improve drainage. Little maintenance is required after planting, though you should monitor for pests and keep the plot weeded. As the harvest time approaches in late spring or summer, withhold water once the foliage begins to yellow and flop over; this process helps the bulbs ripen and prepare for storage.
