Yes, these varieties are hardy and designed to thrive in UK climates when planted during either the spring or autumn seasons.
Plant them so that the tip of the bulb is just visible at the soil surface, or slightly covered with about 1cm of soil.
No, do not peel the garlic. Simply break the bulb into individual cloves and plant each clove with the pointed end facing upwards.
The onions are ready when the foliage begins to wither, turn yellow, and lean over, which usually happens in late summer.
Yes, they are highly suitable for containers as long as the pots provide enough depth for root growth and have good drainage.
Ensure the soil is well-draining; avoid overwatering or planting in heavy, clay-heavy soil without adding grit or organic matter.
Check for weed competition or nutrient deficiency; applying a balanced vegetable fertilizer early in the season can help.
Cover newly planted beds with horticultural fleece or netting until the sets have established a strong root system.
For setup, plant the onion sets with the tip pointing upwards, covering them so only the very top is visible. Garlic cloves should be separated from the bulb and planted point-up at roughly 10cm intervals. Care is straightforward: water the plants during prolonged dry spells, but reduce watering as the bulbs begin to mature to encourage proper skin formation. When the foliage turns yellow and starts to collapse, it is a sign that the bulbs are ready for harvesting. Once lifted, allow the bulbs to dry thoroughly in a well-ventilated, shady area before storing them in a cool, dry place.
