Product Information

Full details

The US PRO Hand Operated Universal Ball Joint Separator (6039) is a specialized automotive tool designed for professional and DIY mechanics who need a reliable, efficient way to disconnect ball joints from tie rod ends, steering knuckles, and lower control arms. Its primary benefit is the 17mm jaw opening and slim, adjustable profile, which allows for precise separation in tight engine bays or suspension areas. However, as a hand-operated tool, it requires manual physical force to engage the pressure mechanism, which may be challenging for users without adequate leverage or space to turn the adjustment bolt.

FAQs

Can this be used with an impact wrench?

No, this is a hand-operated tool. Using an impact wrench may damage the threads and lead to premature failure.

Will this damage the rubber boot?

It is far less likely to damage the boot than traditional wedge-type separators, provided it is aligned correctly.

What is the maximum opening width?

The jaw opening is specifically designed for 17mm applications.

Is this tool suitable for heavy-duty truck ball joints?

It is intended for standard automotive tie rod ends and control arms; it may be too small for heavy-duty industrial or commercial truck joints.

Does it come with a warranty?

Please check with your original point of purchase regarding the US PRO warranty coverage for your specific region.

Troubleshooting

The pressure bolt is difficult to turn

Clean the threads of the adjustment bolt and apply a small amount of heavy-duty grease.

Tool slides off the joint during tightening

Ensure the jaw is positioned squarely and that the stud is centered within the opening before applying pressure.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Compact design ideal for tight, restricted spaces
  • Precise adjustment prevents damage to surrounding suspension components
  • Portable and requires no external power or air supply
  • Sturdy construction for long-term reliability

Cons

  • Manual operation can be physically demanding
  • Not suitable for rusted or seized joints that require significant impact force
  • Limited to a 17mm opening capacity

Setup, Compatibility & Care

Setup:

  1. Ensure the vehicle is safely supported on jack stands before working under the suspension.
  2. Clean the ball joint area with a wire brush to remove debris that might obstruct the tool.
  3. Open the tool's jaw sufficiently by backing off the pressure bolt, place the jaw around the joint, and hand-tighten until the tool is secure and aligned.

Compatibility:

This tool is compatible with most 17mm ball joint studs found on passenger vehicles and light trucks. Always verify the stud diameter before use.

Care:

  • Keep the threaded bolt lubricated with high-pressure grease to prevent seizing and ensure smooth operation.
  • After use, wipe the tool clean with a shop rag.
  • Store in a dry environment to prevent corrosion.
