FAQs

What materials are the GEDORE S 8393 pliers made from?

The pliers are constructed from GEDORE special hardened and tempered steel, chrome-plated for durability and corrosion resistance. The cutting edges are induction-hardened.

What is the main advantage of the 'Best Cutting Power (Bcp)' feature?

Bcp indicates that the pliers are designed to offer optimal cutting force and efficiency at the most effective cutting point with perfect power utilization.

Can these pliers cut through hardened steel wire?

The power side cutter can cut piano wire up to 2.0 mm. For harder materials beyond this specification, other specialized tools may be required.

How does the 'high force build-up' work in the combination and side cutter pliers?

This is achieved through a forward displacement of the pivot point in the joint and, in the case of the side cutters, a convex handle shape, which increases leverage and reduces the effort needed to cut.

Are the handles insulated for electrical work?

The handles feature 2K (two-component) sleeves for grip and comfort. They are not specified as insulated for electrical protection; use appropriate safety precautions when working near live electrical sources.

How do I adjust the universal pliers (142 10 TL)?

The universal pliers feature a 15-way fine adjustment mechanism, typically operated by a button or lever at the pivot point, allowing you to set the jaw opening precisely.

What is the recommended maintenance for these pliers?

Regular cleaning with a dry cloth, occasional lubrication of the pivot joint with machine oil, and proper dry storage are recommended. Avoid exposure to moisture.

Troubleshooting

Pliers feel stiff or difficult to open/close.

Clean the pivot joint thoroughly and apply a light coat of machine oil. Ensure no debris is lodged in the joint.

Cutting edges are dull or not cutting cleanly.

Inspect the cutting edges for damage. If minor dullness, attempt to sharpen with a suitable whetstone. For significant damage, consider professional sharpening or replacement.

Universal pliers' self-clamping mechanism is not engaging.

Ensure the adjustment mechanism is clean and free of debris. Verify that the jaws are properly aligned and not bent. Test on a suitable sized pipe or nut.

Rust spots appearing on the plier surface.

Gently remove rust spots with fine steel wool or a rust remover. Wipe clean and apply a thin layer of oil to protect the surface. Ensure tools are stored in a dry place.

Setup, Compatibility & Care

Setup: This is a hand tool set and requires no setup beyond removing the items from their packaging. Ensure each plier is clean and free of any protective grease before first use.

Compatibility: The pliers are designed for general mechanical, electrical, and plumbing tasks. Specific cutting capacities are listed for wires and piano wire; always ensure the material being cut falls within these specifications for optimal performance and safety.

Care:

  1. Cleaning: After each use, wipe the pliers clean with a dry cloth to remove dirt, debris, and moisture. For stubborn grime, use a lightly damp cloth and dry thoroughly.
  2. Lubrication: Periodically apply a light machine oil to the pivot joint to ensure smooth operation and prevent rust.
  3. Sharpening: If cutting performance diminishes, the induction-hardened edges can be carefully sharpened using a whetstone appropriate for hardened steel. For best results, consult a professional sharpening service.
  4. Storage: Store the pliers in a dry environment, preferably in a tool roll or case, to protect them from moisture and damage.
