FAQs

How do I switch between smartphone and camera/PC mode?

Locate the ON/OFF switch on the microphone body. For smartphones, slide it to the "Smartphone" or "OFF" position. For cameras, camcorders, audio recorders, or PCs, slide it to the "ON" position.

What type of battery does the BY-M1 use and is it included?

The microphone uses one LR44 alkaline battery. Yes, a battery is included with the microphone.

Can I use this microphone with my iPhone/Android phone?

Yes, you can use it with most smartphones. Ensure the switch is set to the "Smartphone" or "OFF" position. If your phone lacks a headphone jack, you will need a compatible 3.5mm to Lightning or USB-C adapter.

How do I attach the microphone?

Use the included lapel clip. Simply clip the microphone onto your clothing, such as a shirt collar or lapel, ensuring it's positioned close to your mouth for clear sound pickup.

What is the benefit of the omnidirectional pickup pattern?

An omnidirectional pattern captures sound equally from all directions (360 degrees). This means it's more forgiving if you turn your head slightly or if the sound source moves, providing a more natural and consistent audio recording without needing precise positioning.

Does the microphone work for recording music?

While it can record audio, the BY-M1 is primarily designed for voice recording in video production. For professional music recording, specialized microphones with different pickup patterns and frequency responses are typically recommended.

How long is the cable?

The microphone comes with a 6-meter (approximately 20 feet) long cable.

Troubleshooting

No sound or low volume detected

Ensure the microphone is switched to the correct mode for your device (Smartphone/OFF or ON). Check that the battery is installed correctly and has sufficient charge. Verify the cable is securely plugged into both the microphone and the device. Test with a different device if possible.

Excessive background noise or static

Ensure the correct mode is selected. Try repositioning the microphone away from noisy equipment or clothing. Use the included foam windscreen, especially when outdoors. Check the cable for any kinks or damage.

Microphone not recognized by smartphone/PC

Confirm the switch is in the "Smartphone" or "OFF" position for smartphones. For PCs, ensure it's set to "ON" and check the system's audio input settings to confirm the microphone is selected. You may need a 3.5mm to USB adapter if your PC lacks a dedicated microphone jack.

Buzzing or humming sound

This could be interference. Try moving the microphone cable away from power cables or other electronic devices. Ensure the battery is properly seated. Test the microphone with a different recording device to rule out interference from the initial device.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Excellent value for its price point.
  • Wide compatibility across various recording devices.
  • Significantly improves audio quality over built-in microphones.
  • Durable build for consistent use.
  • Includes essential accessories for immediate use.

Cons

  • Requires switching between smartphone and camera/PC modes.
  • The 6-meter cable can be cumbersome in very tight spaces.
  • Battery life, while generally good, depends on continuous use.
  • Foam windscreen may not be sufficient for very windy conditions.
  • The 3.5mm connector may require an adapter for newer devices without a headphone jack.

Setup, Compatibility & Care

Setup:

  1. Device Mode Selection: Determine your recording device. For smartphones, slide the ON/OFF switch to the "Smartphone" or "OFF" position. For cameras, camcorders, audio recorders, or PCs, slide the switch to the "ON" position.
  2. Connect Microphone: Plug the 3.5mm jack into the appropriate input on your device. Use the 1/4" adapter if your camera or audio recorder has a larger input.
  3. Attach Microphone: Use the included lapel clip to attach the microphone to your clothing, typically near the collarbone for optimal sound pickup.
  4. Windscreen & Power: Attach the foam windscreen to reduce wind noise. The microphone uses one LR44 battery, which is included.

Compatibility:

The BY-M1 features a 3.5mm (1/8") TRRS connector (for smartphones) and can be used with DSLR cameras, camcorders, audio recorders, PCs, and other audio/video devices with a standard microphone input. For devices lacking a 3.5mm jack (like some newer smartphones or laptops), a separate adapter (e.g., USB-C or Lightning to 3.5mm adapter) will be required.

Care:

  • Store the microphone and its accessories in a dry, safe place when not in use.
  • Gently wipe the microphone body with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals or liquids.
  • Periodically check the cable for any signs of damage.
  • Replace the LR44 battery when the microphone stops producing sound.
