Setup, Compatibility & Care
Sowing Indoors:
- Sow seeds thinly in pots or trays filled with seed compost.
- Cover lightly with compost and water gently.
- Place in a propagator or cover with a clear plastic bag and keep at a temperature of 15-20°C (60-70°F).
- Once germinated, usually within 14-21 days, remove the cover and grow in cooler, bright conditions.
- Transplant seedlings into larger pots when they are large enough to handle and plant out after the risk of frost has passed.
Sowing Outdoors:
- Prepare a fine seedbed in a sunny or partially shaded location.
- Sow seeds thinly directly into the soil.
- Rake lightly to cover the seeds and water gently.
- Thin seedlings to 15cm (6 inches) apart.
Care:
- Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, especially during dry spells.
- Feeding: A light feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer once established can promote flowering.
- Deadheading: Regularly remove spent blooms to encourage further flowering.
Compatibility:
These violas are compatible with most common garden soils and are ideal companions for spring-flowering bulbs like tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths. They also perform well in containers, hanging baskets, and window boxes.
