Setup, Compatibility & Care
These seeds are compatible with most standard garden soil types and can be grown in raised beds, vegetable plots, or even large containers.
Planting Instructions:
- Sowing: Sow seeds directly into the ground after the last frost, or start indoors 2-3 weeks prior. Plant seeds about 1 inch deep and 2-3 feet apart, as squash plants require space to vine.
- Sunlight: Choose a location that receives full sun (at least 6-8 hours per day).
- Soil: Amend soil with compost or well-rotted manure for best results. Ensure good drainage.
- Watering: Water consistently, especially during dry periods, keeping the soil moist but not waterlogged. Water at the base of the plant to avoid mildew.
- Weeding: Keep the area around the plants free of weeds, which compete for nutrients and water.
Care:
- Pest and Disease: Monitor for common squash pests like squash bugs and vine borers. Consider row covers early in the season.
- Harvesting: Harvest fruits when they reach mature size and the rind is firm. The stem should be dry, and the skin should be hard to puncture with a fingernail. Leave a portion of the stem attached.
- Curing: After harvesting, cure the squash in a warm, dry, well-ventilated area for about 10-14 days. This hardens the skin and improves storage life.
