FAQs

What is an RCD?

An RCD (Residual Current Device) is a safety device that protects against electric shock by detecting and interrupting the flow of electricity to earth in the event of a fault.

What does Type A mean?

Type A RCDs are designed to detect AC and pulsating DC fault currents. They are suitable for many common applications.

Why is the 30mA rating important?

The 30mA sensitivity rating provides a high level of protection against electric shock. It will trip quickly enough to prevent serious harm.

How often should I test the RCD?

Test the RCD monthly by pressing the test button. Refer to the manufacturer's instructions for specific guidance.

Who can install this RCD?

This RCD should only be installed by a qualified electrician.

What is the lifespan of an RCD?

RCDs have a long lifespan, but they should be replaced if they fail testing or show signs of damage. Regular testing is vital.

What should I do if the RCD trips?

First, identify the cause of the trip (e.g., faulty appliance). Then, rectify the fault and reset the RCD. If it trips repeatedly, consult an electrician.

Troubleshooting

RCD trips frequently.

Check connected appliances for faults. Contact a qualified electrician to inspect the electrical installation.

RCD does not trip when the test button is pressed.

The RCD may be faulty. Contact a qualified electrician to replace it.

RCD trips when a new appliance is connected.

The appliance may have an earth leakage fault. Disconnect the appliance and have it checked by a qualified technician.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Provides essential protection against electric shock.
  • Suitable for various electrical installations.
  • Reliable and durable design.
  • Easy to install (by a qualified electrician).
  • Complies with relevant safety standards.

Cons

  • Requires professional installation.
  • Must be regularly tested to ensure proper function.
  • May trip due to nuisance currents if the electrical system isn't well maintained.
  • Limited to 63A circuits.
  • Does not protect against overload or short-circuit faults (requires additional devices).

Setup, Compatibility & Care

  • Installation: This device MUST be installed by a qualified electrician in accordance with local regulations and wiring codes. Incorrect installation can be dangerous.
  • Compatibility: Compatible with electrical systems that require earth leakage protection up to 63A.
  • Testing: Regularly test the RCD using the test button (usually monthly). If the RCD does not trip when tested, consult a qualified electrician.
  • Maintenance: No specific maintenance is required, but the electrical system it protects should be inspected regularly for faults.
