FAQs

Can I use 0.5mm lead in this pencil?

No, this specific model (PG519) is strictly engineered for 0.9mm lead. Using incorrect sizes will cause the mechanism to jam.

Is the tip retractable?

No, the Graph Gear 500 features a fixed drafting sleeve.

Does this pencil have a built-in sharpener?

No, mechanical pencils do not require sharpening. The lead advances through a clutch mechanism.

What is the weight of the pencil?

The Pentel Graph Gear 500 weighs approximately 14 grams.

Is the grip replaceable?

The grip is integrated into the structural design of the pencil and is not meant to be removed or replaced.

What size eraser does this use?

It uses standard Pentel refill erasers. You can pull the eraser out and replace it when worn down.

Troubleshooting

Lead keeps breaking during use

Ensure you are not extending more than 1mm of lead at a time. Also, verify that you are using high-quality 0.9mm lead.

Lead advancement is stuck

Remove the eraser and clear out any lead fragments or 'lead dust' that may have accumulated inside the internal reservoir.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Excellent balance and weight distribution
  • Durable construction with metallic grip
  • Precise lead advancement mechanism
  • Comfortable for extended drafting sessions

Cons

  • Metallic grip may feel firm for some users
  • Not intended for fine-line detail (0.9mm size)
  • Lack of a retractable tip design

Setup, Compatibility & Care

To load lead, simply remove the cap and eraser from the top of the pencil and insert 0.9mm lead refills into the magazine. We recommend keeping no more than two or three pieces of lead inside at once to prevent jamming. The pencil is compatible with all standard 0.9mm lead refills. For maintenance, clean the grip with a soft, dry cloth to remove debris from the knurling to maintain the anti-slip properties. Avoid dropping the pencil on its tip, as the internal lead sleeve can be bent, which may impede smooth lead advancement.
