Product Information

Full details

The Trek Fuel EXe 9.8 XT is designed for mountain bikers who want the natural handling of a traditional trail bike combined with subtle, quiet electric assistance. It features a lightweight OCLV Mountain Carbon frame and a compact TQ harmonic pin ring transmission that provides intuitive power without the bulk of a typical e-bike, though it features a smaller 360 Wh battery that may limit range on extremely long, high-assistance backcountry rides.

FAQs

Can the battery be removed for charging?

The 360 Wh battery is designed to be internal to the frame for maximum protection and weight distribution.

How much does the bike weigh?

The Fuel EXe 9.8 XT is significantly lighter than standard e-mtbs due to its carbon frame and compact TQ motor, making it easy to maneuver on tight trails.

Is the bike compatible with range extenders?

Yes, the Trek Fuel EXe platform is compatible with TQ range extender batteries if you need more capacity for longer adventures.

How do I update the TQ system firmware?

Firmware updates are handled through the official TQ mobile app which connects to the bike via Bluetooth.

Does the bike have any drag when the motor is off?

No, the TQ harmonic pin ring transmission is engineered to have zero resistance, allowing you to pedal it like a standard mountain bike.

Troubleshooting

Motor assistance feels intermittent

Check the connection of the speed sensor at the rear wheel and ensure the magnet is properly aligned.

App fails to connect to the bike

Ensure Bluetooth is enabled on your phone and cycle the power on both the bike and the app; verify the bike's battery is adequately charged.

Unexpected noise during operation

Verify that all drivetrain components are clean and lubricated; if the noise persists, consult a certified Trek dealer to inspect the TQ transmission mount.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Near-silent motor operation maintains the trail experience
Lightweight carbon frame feels agile and responsive
High-performance Shimano XT and RockShox components
Natural pedaling feel without motor drag when assistance is off

Cons

Smaller battery capacity compared to full-power e-mtbs
Higher price point reflecting premium carbon and components
Less total torque compared to heavy-duty, high-wattage e-bike motors

Setup, Compatibility & Care

To ensure peak performance, riders should perform a sag setup on the RockShox Lyrik and Super Deluxe suspension to match their body weight. The TQ system integrates via an app for firmware updates and customization of assistance modes. Always store the bike in a cool, dry place and ensure the battery is charged to roughly 50-80% if it will not be used for an extended period. Regularly check the drivetrain for chain wear, as the added torque of an e-bike motor can accelerate wear on the cassette and chain compared to a standard mountain bike.
