Rainsmart shallow 65-tonne soakaway crates are supplied flat-packed for quick on-site assembly, typically taking 1–2 minutes per unit with a rubber mallet. Once assembled, each crate measures 600mm × 600mm × 360mm and forms part of a single-layer shallow installation. Each crate provides 123 litres of storage with a 95% void ratio, and eight crates combine to create a 1m³ shallow soakaway. With a 65 t/m² vertical load rating, this system is suitable for high-load environments including residential developments, commercial projects and infrastructure applications. No structural clips are required — cable ties can be used to hold the crates in place during assembly, with the surrounding side fill providing long-term stability. Non-woven geotextile membrane is included and must be wrapped around all outward-facing surfaces to prevent soil or sand ingress and maintain long-term efficiency. Rainwater enters the system by butting the stormwater pipe against the crate. Lay the membrane first, cut a small cross at the pipe entry point, fold it back, insert the pipe and secure the membrane tightly around it. A weak concrete mix may be added around the pipe for increased stability if required. A rubber mallet is supplied with full 1m³ sets. To improve performance and extend the working life of the soakaway, a pre-filter such as the SiltGuard Silt Trap is recommended.
