FAQs

What does the ND64 filter do?

The ND64 filter reduces the amount of light entering the lens by 6 f-stops. This allows you to use slower shutter speeds in bright conditions, ideal for creating motion blur in water or clouds, or for shooting wide open in daylight.

How do I use the Soft Graduated ND8 filter?

Position the filter so the darkest part is over the brightest area of your scene (usually the sky) and the clear part is over the darkest area (usually the foreground). The 'soft' transition is best for horizons with uneven terrain or elements breaking the horizon line.

Can I stack these filters?

Yes, you can stack filters, but it's generally recommended to use only one or two at a time for best image quality. Stacking too many can lead to reduced sharpness, color shifts, and vignetting. The slim rim design helps minimize stacking issues.

What is the benefit of the UV Plus+ filter?

The UV Plus+ filter helps reduce haze and UV light, improving clarity and color saturation, especially in landscape shots. It also serves as a protective layer for your camera's front lens element.

How do I clean the filters?

Use a soft microfiber lens cloth to wipe the surface. For stubborn marks, apply a small amount of lens cleaning solution to the cloth, then wipe the filter gently. Avoid touching the glass directly with your fingers.

What does 'Plus+' signify in the filter names?

The 'Plus+' designation typically refers to Urth's enhanced coatings and quality standards, including 20-layer nano-coating for better light transmission, scratch resistance, and easier cleaning.

Does this kit come with a carrying case?

Yes, Urth filter kits typically come with protective cases designed to store and transport the filters safely.

Troubleshooting

Vignetting (dark corners) in photos

Ensure you are not stacking too many filters. Check that the filter rim is not obstructing the lens's view, especially when using a wide-angle lens. The slim design should minimize this, but lens design varies.

Reduced image sharpness or color cast

Ensure the lens and filter glass are clean. The 20-layer nano-coating is designed for high transmission, but smudges or damage can affect quality. Verify the filter is securely and correctly attached.

Difficulty screwing filter onto lens

Confirm you are using the correct filter size (67mm). Ensure the lens threads are clean and free of debris. Try screwing the filter on gently and straight, avoiding force.

CPL filter not reducing reflections effectively

Ensure the filter is rotated correctly. Reflections are angle-dependent; try adjusting your shooting angle relative to the reflective surface. Polarizing filters do not affect metallic reflections.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Provides four essential filters in one kit for creative flexibility.
  • High-quality German SCHOTT glass ensures excellent image clarity and color fidelity.
  • Durable magnalium construction offers longevity.
  • Slim rim design prevents vignetting on many lens types.
  • Includes filters for a wide range of photographic scenarios, from reducing glare to long exposures.

Cons

  • Fixed kit; cannot purchase individual filters separately from this specific bundle.
  • Only compatible with lenses featuring a 67mm filter thread.
  • ND64 filter may be too strong for some low-light situations requiring minimal light reduction.
  • Graduated ND requires careful alignment for optimal effect.

Setup, Compatibility & Care

Setup: Screw the desired filter onto the front of your 67mm threaded lens. Ensure it is threaded on straight to avoid cross-threading. For graduated filters, rotate the outer ring to position the gradient as needed.

Compatibility: This kit is specifically designed for lenses with a 67mm front filter thread. Always confirm your lens's filter size before purchasing. It is part of Urth's Plus+ range, designed for quality and durability.

Care: To maintain optimal performance:

  1. Cleaning: Gently wipe the filter glass with a soft, lint-free microfiber cloth. For stubborn smudges, use a lens cleaning solution sparingly on the cloth, not directly on the glass.
  2. Storage: Store filters in their protective cases when not in use to prevent scratches and dust.
  3. Handling: Avoid touching the glass surface with your fingers. Handle filters by their rims.
