Setup, Compatibility & Care
To ensure your Sambucus shrubs get the best start, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball and incorporate organic matter into the soil. While these plants tolerate waterlogged ground, ensure the area is not permanently submerged for optimal health. If planting multiple specimens, space them at least 3-4 metres apart to account for their impressive spread. Water thoroughly during the first growing season, particularly during dry spells. Once established, these shrubs are relatively low-maintenance, requiring only occasional pruning in late winter to remove dead or diseased wood and to maintain the desired shape and size.
