FAQs
Can I use this for watercolor?
This canvas is designed primarily for oils and acrylics. Watercolor requires specialized absorbent grounds, which would need to be applied as a heavy primer layer.
Do I have to use gesso?
Yes, it is highly recommended. Unprimed canvas is porous and will absorb oils directly into the fibers, which can rot the fabric over time.
Is this canvas acid-free?
As a raw cotton product, it does not contain added acid, but proper priming is required to maintain archival status.
Can I paint on the reverse side?
While technically possible, the texture of the back may differ from the intended front. It is best to prime and paint on the intended 'right' side.
How do I remove wrinkles from the roll?
Light wrinkles usually disappear once the canvas is stretched tightly. For stubborn creases, a light mist of water before stretching can help the fibers relax.
Troubleshooting
Canvas appears loose after stretching
Use canvas keys or wedges in the corners of your stretcher bars to gently expand the frame and tighten the fabric.
Surface absorbs too much paint
The canvas likely lacks sufficient primer. Apply an additional coat of gesso to seal the fibers and create a more efficient painting barrier.

Setup, Compatibility & Care
To prepare your Seawhite Unprimed Cotton Canvas, follow these essential steps:
- Measuring and Cutting: Place your stretcher bars on the canvas and mark a border large enough to wrap around to the back of the frame.
- Stretching: Use professional canvas pliers to pull the fabric taut, stapling from the center of each side outward to ensure uniform tension.
- Sizing/Priming: Apply a sizing agent (such as PVA size or rabbit skin glue) to seal the raw fibers, followed by your preferred gesso or primer. Allow each layer to dry completely before applying the next.
- Storage: Store the unused portion of the roll in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent the cotton fibers from becoming brittle or yellowing over time.
