De-ionised water has had its mineral ions removed, making it pure. It's ideal for applications like window cleaning, car washing, and aquariums where mineral deposits would cause spots or interfere with the water quality.
The resin's effectiveness diminishes over time. You can test the water purity with a TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) meter. When the TDS reading starts to rise significantly from zero, it's time to replace the resin.
