Product Information
Full details
The Cokin NUANCES Extreme Solid ND64 filter is designed for photographers and videographers seeking to control light for creative effects. Its primary benefit is reducing light by six stops, enabling wider apertures in bright conditions and the use of slower shutter speeds for motion blur. A key consideration is the need for a compatible filter holder system.

FAQs
What does ND64 mean?
ND64 indicates the filter reduces the amount of light by 6 stops. 'ND' stands for Neutral Density, and '64' refers to the multiplicative factor of light reduction (approximately 2^6 = 64).
Do I need a special lens for this filter?
No, but you will need a Cokin Z-Pro filter holder and the correct size adapter ring for your specific lens thread.
Can I stack this filter with other Cokin filters?
Yes, the Cokin Z-Pro system allows for stacking multiple filters, though stacking too many can lead to vignetting or image degradation.
How does this compare to a 3-stop ND filter?
A 3-stop ND filter reduces light by a factor of 8 (2^3), while the ND64 reduces light by a factor of 64 (2^6). The ND64 allows for much longer exposures or wider apertures in bright light.
Is the Schott Glass truly unbreakable?
The 'Hardened Tempered Schott Glass' is significantly more durable and 4x stronger than previous generations, making it resistant to breakage during normal use and expeditions. However, like all glass, it can still be broken under extreme force or impact.
Will this filter affect the autofocus performance?
With a 6-stop reduction, autofocus systems may struggle in very low light conditions that result from the filter. It is often recommended to pre-focus or use manual focus when using strong ND filters.
Troubleshooting
Filter causes a color cast on images.
Ensure you are using a genuine Cokin NUANCES Extreme filter. While designed for color neutrality, slight variations can occur. Check your camera's white balance settings. If the cast is significant, it may require post-processing correction.
Light leaks are visible around the edges.
Confirm the filter is fully seated in the Cokin Z-Pro filter holder. Ensure the filter holder itself is properly attached to the adapter ring and that no light is entering from behind the filter.
Difficulty achieving desired exposure.
Remember this is a 6-stop ND filter. Your camera's meter will be significantly underexposed. Use manual mode or exposure compensation based on your creative intent (e.g., desired shutter speed for motion blur).
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Provides significant 6-stop light reduction for extensive creative control.
- Robust construction using hardened tempered glass increases durability.
- Enables creative effects like motion blur and shallow depth of field in bright light.
- Maintains good color neutrality for accurate image reproduction.
- Compatible with Cokin's Z-Pro filter holder system.
Cons
- Requires a separate filter holder system (sold separately).
- Can be challenging to recompose with a filter attached due to light reduction.
- Not ideal for situations requiring precise, unmanipulated exposure in bright light.
- Potential for light leaks if not properly seated in the filter holder.
- Can be an investment when factoring in the cost of the filter holder.
Setup, Compatibility & Care
Setup: This filter requires a Cokin Z-Pro filter holder system, which attaches to your lens via a specific adapter ring. Ensure the filter holder is securely mounted to the adapter ring on your lens. Slide the ND64 filter into one of the slots on the holder. For best results, ensure the filter is seated firmly and that there are no gaps around the edges that could cause light leaks.
Compatibility: The Cokin NUANCES Extreme Solid ND64 filter is designed for use with the Cokin Z-Pro filter holder. You will need to purchase the appropriate Z-Pro adapter ring for your lens's filter thread size (e.g., 77mm, 82mm). The Z-Pro system is compatible with lenses that can accommodate its larger filter size.
Care: Clean the filter surface gently with a soft, lint-free microfiber cloth. For stubborn smudges, a small amount of lens cleaning solution can be applied to the cloth, never directly to the filter. Store the filter in a protective pouch or its original packaging when not in use to prevent scratches and dust accumulation.
