Setup, Compatibility & Care Instructions
Sowing: Sow seeds directly into the ground or start them in pots. For direct sowing, prepare a well-drained soil in a sunny position. Sow seeds about 5cm (2in) deep and 15cm (6in) apart. In a double row, space rows 20-30cm (8-12in) apart.
Positioning: Prefers a location in full sun.
Support: As plants grow to approximately 90cm (35") tall, they will require support. Place a sturdy cane or stake at each corner of a double row and tie the plants in gently with string. This is crucial in windy gardens to prevent damage.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry spells and when the plants are flowering and setting pods.
Weeding: Hoe regularly between rows to control weeds, being careful not to disturb the shallow roots.
Blackfly Prevention: To deter blackfly and encourage more pod development, pinch out the growing tips of the main stem once the first pods have formed.
Harvesting: Harvest broad beans when the pods are plump and well-filled, but the seeds are still tender and soft. Cut pods from the plant using scissors or a sharp knife.
Care: Generally easy to care for, requiring minimal intervention beyond the basic support, watering, and weeding. The variety is hardy, meaning it can withstand cooler temperatures.
