Squash 'Sunshine' lives up to its name with luminous orange-red skin that glows wonderfully in the summer and autumnal sun. Expect plenty of luscious, large fruits, weighing approximately 1.5kg (3lb) each. These are a delightful treat for both the eyes and the palate, versatile enough to be enjoyed raw, baked, or steamed in various dishes. Sow from April to May. For sowing seeds, place them 1cm (½ inch) deep in 7.5cm (3 inch) pots filled with free-draining compost. Position the pots in a propagator or seal them in a polythene bag, maintaining a temperature of 20-25°C (68-77°F) until germination occurs, which typically takes 7 to 10 days. Crucially, do not exclude light, as it aids germination. Alternatively, seeds can be sown directly outdoors once the soil has warmed sufficiently. Sow two seeds every 90cm (36 inches) and thin to the strongest seedling. Gradually acclimatise the plants to outdoor conditions over a few days before planting them out permanently after all risk of frost has passed, ensuring they are spaced 90cm (36 inches) apart.
