Melcourt SylvaGrow Rose, Tree and Shrub is an ideal choice for gardeners looking to establish new plants, trees, and shrubs in permanent garden soil settings. Formulated with a blend of high-quality bark and green compost, this 100% peat-free growing medium provides essential slow-release nutrients to encourage robust root development and healthy plant longevity. While this product excels at helping plants settle into the ground, users should note it is specifically designed for open-ground planting and is not suitable for pots or container gardening, where different moisture retention properties are required.

This product comes in a 40-litre bag.

Is it truly peat-free?

Troubleshooting

Water sitting on top of the soil after planting

Ensure the mixture was integrated well with the native soil; if the ground is compacted clay, incorporate more organic matter to improve permeability.

Plant showing signs of wilting shortly after installation

Check the soil moisture level. While the compost retains moisture well, newly planted shrubs require regular watering until their roots have fully extended into the surrounding soil.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Environmentally sustainable and 100% peat-free
  • Encourages vigorous root establishment for new plantings
  • Easy to incorporate into existing garden beds
  • Backed by professional landscaping experience and RHS endorsement

Cons

  • Not suitable for use in containers or pots
  • Requires proper mixing with existing native soil for optimal results
  • Specific to woody plants like roses, trees, and shrubs rather than all-purpose gardening

Setup, Compatibility & Care

To use this compost effectively, clear the planting area of weeds and debris before digging a hole twice the width of the plant's root system. Remove the plant from its temporary container, gently loosen any bound roots, and place it in the hole. Fill the space using a 50/50 mix of your excavated garden soil and SylvaGrow. Once filled, firm the soil gently with your heel to remove large air pockets and water the plant thoroughly immediately after planting to ensure the roots are in full contact with the soil.

*Important Note:* This product is not designed for potting. If you are planting in containers, use a dedicated container compost like SylvaGrow Multi-Purpose or a John Innes blend, which have different water-holding and structural characteristics.
