Setup, Compatibility & Care
Proper installation and care are essential to maximize the lifespan and performance of your HPE SmartMemory module.
Installation Steps:
- Prepare the Server: Power down the server completely and unplug all power cords. Allow sufficient time for components to cool.
- Access Memory Slots: Open the server chassis. Consult your server's documentation to locate the memory DIMM slots.
- Static Precautions: Wear an anti-static wrist strap and ensure you are working in a static-free environment to prevent damage to the module.
- Insert the Module: Gently press down the ejector clips on the DIMM slot. Align the memory module with the slot, ensuring the notch on the module matches the key in the slot. Apply even pressure to both ends of the module until it clicks into place and the ejector clips secure it.
- Reassemble & Power On: Close the server chassis, reconnect power cords, and power on the server. The system BIOS should automatically detect the new memory.
Compatibility:
- HPE Servers: This module is specifically optimized for HPE ProLiant servers. For best results and full feature support, verify compatibility with your specific HPE server model using the HPE PartSure tool or your server's QuickSpecs.
- DDR4 Registered ECC Support: Your server motherboard and CPU must support DDR4 Registered DIMM (RDIMM) with ECC functionality. This module is *not* compatible with consumer-grade motherboards that typically require Unbuffered DIMMs (UDIMMs).
- Operating System: Ensure your operating system (e.g., Windows Server, Linux distributions, VMware ESXi) supports the total installed memory capacity.
Care and Maintenance:
- Handle with Care: Always handle memory modules by their edges, avoiding contact with the gold connectors or integrated circuits.
- Storage: Store unused modules in anti-static bags to protect them from electrostatic discharge.
- Clean Environment: Install memory in a clean, dust-free environment to prevent buildup on connectors, which can lead to connectivity issues.
- Firmware Updates: Ensure your server's BIOS/UEFI firmware is up-to-date, as updates often include memory compatibility and stability improvements.
