Read Write Inc. Home: Phonics Flashcards - Oxford University Press

These flashcards are typically suitable for children aged 4-7, or whenever they are beginning their phonics journey and learning to read with the Read Write Inc. program.

While not strictly necessary, familiarity with the Read Write Inc. methodology will help you use the flashcards most effectively and ensure consistency with what your child might be learning at school. Resources are available from Oxford University Press to guide parents.

The Phonics Flashcards are an excellent supplementary resource for reinforcing phonics skills. They are most effective when used as part of a comprehensive phonics program, such as Read Write Inc., rather than as a standalone reading curriculum.

Info needed: The exact number of flashcards included in a set may vary. Please refer to the product packaging or official product description for this specific detail.

Turn learning into a game! Try 'speed sounds', 'sound detective' where they find objects starting with the sound, or 'making words' to blend sounds into simple words. Keep sessions short, positive, and praise effort generously.

Yes, these flashcards are designed with durability in mind to withstand the frequent handling typical of young learners during phonics practice.

Keep sessions short (5-10 minutes). Introduce variety by playing different games (e.g., 'hide and seek' the sound, 'speedy sounds'). Offer praise for effort, not just correct answers. End on a positive note.

Go back to basics. Revisit previously mastered sounds to build confidence. Break words into individual sounds more slowly. Use multi-sensory approaches like having the child trace the letter shape with their finger while saying the sound. Don't push too hard; a break and return later can often help.

Store the cards carefully in their box after each use. Consider laminating the cards individually for enhanced durability, especially if they are being used by multiple children or in a busy environment.

Refer to Read Write Inc. online resources or videos that demonstrate correct sound pronunciation. Many RWI publications include guidance on 'pure' sounds to help parents and educators.
