Setup, Compatibility & Care
Sowing Indoors:
- Sow Lychnis seed indoors from February to April.
- Use a good quality seed compost and sow seeds on the surface.
- Gently firm down the compost.
- Seal seed trays inside a plastic bag or place in a heated propagator at 19-24°C (65-75°F).
- Do not exclude light, as it aids germination.
- Keep compost moist but not saturated. Germination typically takes 10-20 days.
Transplanting and Outdoor Care:
- When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots.
- Grow them on in cooler conditions until they are ready for planting outdoors.
- Plant outdoors in a position of full sun or semi-shade.
- Ensure the soil is well-drained. The plant can reach a height of up to 60cm and spread up to 45cm.
Ongoing Care:
- Deadheading: Regularly deadhead faded flowers to prolong the blooming period and prevent unwanted self-seeding.
- Pruning: In autumn, cut back old foliage and faded flower stems to just above ground level to prepare for new growth in spring.
- Watering: Water regularly during dry periods, especially when establishing.
