Full details

The SmallRig 1859 Microphone Shock Mount is an essential tool for filmmakers and content creators who require professional-grade audio isolation during field recording. It is specifically designed to accommodate a wide variety of shotgun and cylindrical microphones, effectively neutralizing vibrations and handling noise to ensure clean audio captures. While it offers versatile mounting options for both cameras and boom poles, users should note that the four-point suspension system is optimized for cylindrical mics within the specified diameter range and may not be compatible with square or unconventional microphone chassis shapes.

FAQs

Does this mount fit all shotgun microphones?

It fits most cylindrical shotgun microphones with a diameter between 0.59 and 1.57 inches (15-40mm).

Can I use this on a tripod?

Yes, if your tripod has a 3/8-16 mounting stud or if you use a 3/8 to 1/4 inch adapter.

Is the suspension band replaceable?

The suspension system is integrated; ensure proper care to maintain the elasticity of the rubber components.

Does it include a windscreen?

No, this product is the shock mount only and does not include a microphone or windscreen.

Can it hold heavy microphones?

It is designed to support standard shotgun microphones; avoid exceeding the weight capacity that would cause the suspension to bottom out.

Troubleshooting

Microphone slipping out of the mount

Ensure the microphone is positioned firmly within the center of all four suspension points and that the diameter is within the 15-40mm supported range.

Mount feels loose on camera cold shoe

Check the locking mechanism on your camera's cold shoe and ensure the mounting foot of the shock mount is fully inserted and tightened.

Handling noise still audible in recording

Verify that the microphone cable has enough slack (a loop) between the mic and the camera/recorder, as a tight cable can transmit vibrations directly to the microphone.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Highly versatile with multiple mounting configurations
Excellent vibration isolation for field recording
Sturdy yet lightweight construction
Universal fit for a wide range of microphone diameters

Cons

Not suitable for non-cylindrical shaped microphones
Requires manual adjustment for optimal angle positioning
Limited to microphones between 15mm and 40mm in diameter

Setup, Compatibility & Care

To set up the mount, loosen the adjustment knob to set your desired angle, then insert your microphone into the four-point suspension rings, ensuring it is centered for balance. If mounting to a boom pole, screw the base onto the 3/8-16 adapter until firm.

Compatibility: Works with most industry-standard shotgun mics between 15mm and 40mm. Always verify your microphone's diameter before use.

Care: Periodically check the rubber suspension bands for signs of wear. Keep the mount away from excessive moisture, and clean the aluminum components with a dry microfiber cloth to maintain the finish.
