FAQs
Can I grow these in pots?
Yes, 'Gardener's Delight' performs very well in containers, provided the pot is large enough to support the 200cm height and is kept well-watered.
Do I need to pinch out side shoots?
Yes, as it is a cordon variety, pinching out side shoots helps the plant focus energy on fruit production rather than excessive vegetative growth.
When should I start feeding the plants?
Begin using a high-potash fertiliser as soon as the first truss of fruit has clearly formed.
How tall will these plants grow?
Under ideal conditions, they can grow up to 200cm tall, so ensure you have suitable supports ready.
Are these tomatoes suitable for beginners?
Absolutely. Their status as an RHS Award winner indicates they are reliable and relatively straightforward to manage with basic care.
What is the minimum temperature these plants need?
You should maintain a minimum temperature of 15°C to ensure continued, healthy growth.
Troubleshooting
Flowers are dropping off without setting fruit
This is often caused by poor pollination or high temperatures. Ensure the greenhouse is well-ventilated and gently shake the plants to assist pollination.
Leaves are curling or wilting
This is typically a response to inconsistent watering. Establish a regular watering routine and ensure the soil remains moist but not waterlogged.
Plants are stunted in growth
Check the ambient temperature; the plants will struggle if kept below 15°C. Move to a warmer, sunnier location if necessary.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Consistently high yield of flavourful cherry tomatoes
- Recognized with the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit
- Versatile growing options for greenhouse or outdoors
- Compact spread of 50cm fits well in smaller garden layouts
Cons
- Requires consistent monitoring of soil moisture
- Needs vertical support structures due to 200cm height
- Sensitive to temperatures below 15°C
- Requires careful airflow management to prevent fungal issues
Setup, Compatibility & Care
- Germination: Start seeds indoors at temperatures between 15°C and 20°C. Maintain consistent warmth until germination.
- Planting Out: Only move plants to their final outdoor position once the risk of frost has passed and night temperatures remain consistently above 15°C.
- Watering: Maintain evenly moist soil. During peak summer, check pots or soil daily as containers can dry out rapidly.
- Pruning: As a cordon variety, pinch out the side shoots that appear in the leaf axils to direct energy into the main fruit trusses.
- Disease Control: Ensure good plant spacing to allow for adequate air circulation, which is the best defense against fungal pathogens.
