Setup, Compatibility & Care
Sowing:
Sow seeds thinly directly into well-drained soil in a sunny or partially shaded location. For beds, sow at a depth of 0.5-1 cm. For containers or under cover, a good quality seed compost is recommended.
Spacing:
While seeds can be sown closely for a cut-and-come-again harvest, allow around 15-20 cm between plants if growing to full size to ensure good air circulation.
Watering:
Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry spells, to encourage continuous leaf growth and prevent bolting. Water at the base of the plants.
Harvesting:
Begin harvesting outer leaves when plants are about 10-15 cm tall. Regular harvesting encourages further growth and maintains the best flavour. For a continuous supply, practice the 'cut-and-come-again' method, taking about one-third of the plant each time.
Protection:
In colder climates or for winter harvests, sow under cover (e.g., in a greenhouse, cold frame, or cloche). Protect young plants from harsh frosts.
Compatibility:
'Dragon's Fire' is compatible with most garden soil types, provided they are well-drained. It grows well in containers, window boxes, and raised beds, making it suitable for various gardening spaces, including balconies and patios.
