Product Information

Full details

The TP-Link MC100CM V1 is a network media converter designed for IT professionals and network administrators who need to bridge copper Ethernet networks with fiber optic infrastructure. Its key benefit is extending network distances and enhancing network resilience by converting 100BASE-TX copper signals to 100BASE-FX multi-mode fiber signals. A caveat is its specific use with multi-mode fiber and its maximum transfer distance of 2km, requiring careful consideration of existing network topology.

FAQs

What is the maximum distance the TP-Link MC100CM can cover?

The MC100CM supports a maximum transfer distance of 2000 meters (approximately 1.2 miles) over multi-mode fiber optic cable.

Can this media converter be used with single-mode fiber?

No, the MC100CM is specifically designed for multi-mode fiber optic cable and will not work with single-mode fiber.

Does the MC100CM support Gigabit Ethernet speeds?

No, this model supports a maximum data transfer rate of 100 Mbps and is not compatible with Gigabit Ethernet.

What type of fiber optic connector does it use?

It uses an SC-Type connector for its fiber optic connection.

Does the device automatically detect cable type (straight-through vs. crossover)?

Yes, the Auto MDI/MDI-X feature automatically detects and configures the TX port, allowing the use of either a straight-through or crossover Ethernet cable.

What networking standards does the MC100CM comply with?

It complies with IEEE 802.3, IEEE 802.3u, and IEEE 802.3x standards.

Are there any LEDs to indicate status?

Yes, the device is equipped with LED indicators to show power, link status, and activity on both the copper and fiber ports.

Troubleshooting

No link light on the copper (RJ-45) port.

Ensure the Ethernet cable is securely connected to both the MC100CM and the connected device. Verify the connected device is powered on and configured for 10/100Mbps. Try a different Ethernet cable.

No link light on the fiber port.

Confirm the fiber optic cable is compatible (multi-mode) and correctly seated in the SC connector. Ensure the fiber cable is not damaged and is properly connected at both ends. Check that the connected fiber device is powered on.

Slow or intermittent network performance.

Verify that both ends of the connection are set to the same duplex mode (auto-negotiation should handle this, but manual setting might be needed on older equipment). Check for excessive network traffic or potential interference. Ensure fiber optic connectors are clean.

Device is not powering on.

Ensure the power adapter is correctly connected to the MC100CM and the power outlet. Try a different power outlet. Verify that the correct power adapter is being used.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Extends network reach significantly over copper.
Provides a cost-effective solution for integrating fiber optic links.
Supports auto-negotiation for flexible network configurations.
Compact design for easy deployment in various environments.
Reliable performance compliant with industry standards.

Cons

Limited to 100Mbps speeds; not suitable for Gigabit+ networks.
Specific to multi-mode fiber, not compatible with single-mode.
Maximum transfer distance of 2km may be insufficient for very long-haul applications.
Requires separate power adapter (not always included depending on package).
Does not support advanced network management features.

Setup, Compatibility & Care

Setup:

Connect a 100Base-TX Ethernet device (like a switch or PC) to the RJ-45 port using a Cat3, Cat4, Cat5, or Cat5e cable.
Connect the multi-mode fiber optic cable (with SC connector) to the fiber port.
Connect the power adapter to the converter and plug it into a power outlet.
LEDs will indicate the status of power, link, and activity.

Compatibility:

Ethernet Standards: IEEE 802.3, IEEE 802.3u, IEEE 802.3x.
Cable Types: Cat3, Cat4, Cat5, Cat5e for copper.
Fiber Type: Multi-mode fiber only, with SC connector.
Wavelength: 1310nm.
Data Rates: 10/100 Mbps.

Care:

Keep the device in a well-ventilated area to prevent overheating. Operating temperature: 0°C to 40°C.
Avoid exposing the device to moisture. Operating relative humidity: 10% to 90% (non-condensing).
Clean the exterior with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Do not use liquid cleaners.
Ensure connections are secure but do not overtighten.
