The Park Tool Hydraulic Brake Piston Press is an essential utility for home mechanics and professional bike technicians who perform regular hydraulic disc brake maintenance. Its primary benefit is the ability to quickly and safely reset brake pistons during pad replacements without damaging the caliper or the pistons themselves. While highly effective for most standard calipers, users should note that its geometry is specifically optimized for modern hydraulic systems and may not be compatible with older or non-standard proprietary brake designs.

This tool is specifically designed for hydraulic systems where pistons need to be reset into the caliper housing.
The tool is designed to distribute pressure evenly, which significantly reduces the risk of chipping or cracking ceramic pistons compared to using a flat-head screwdriver.
It is designed to be used while the pads are still installed, making it much faster to reset pistons during a pad swap.
While optimized for Shimano XTR, the universal wedge shape often fits many other hydraulic calipers, but compatibility should be verified based on the specific caliper opening width.
Simply wipe it clean with a shop rag after use. Keep it free of oil or brake fluid, which can make the tool slippery during operation.
Ensure the brake pads are not seized and that there is at least a small gap available; if pads are completely locked, you may need to remove them first.
Ensure the bleed port is not blocked and there is no excess pressure in the line; verify you are pushing straight against the center of the piston.
Using the QKPP1 is straightforward: simply remove the wheel from the bicycle, ensure the rotor is out of the way, and gently insert the wedge end between the old brake pads. Gently rotate or press the tool to widen the gap until the pistons are fully retracted. Keep the tool clean and free of brake fluid or debris to ensure it maintains a solid grip. While the tool is robust, avoid using excessive leverage that could bend the caliper housing. Store the tool in a dry environment to prevent corrosion.
