Product Information

Full details

The Pro-Tec Zinc Galvanised Aluminium Primer is designed for professional metalworkers and DIY enthusiasts who need to repair damaged galvanised surfaces while maintaining structural integrity. Its primary benefit is the ability to provide superior corrosion resistance while allowing for weld-through capability, making it an essential tool for automotive and industrial metal repair projects. While it offers excellent durability, users should be aware that it requires proper surface preparation, including clean and dry substrates, to ensure optimal adhesion and long-term performance.

FAQs

Can I paint over this primer?

Yes, this primer is designed to be a base coat and is compatible with most standard topcoat paints once fully cured.

Is this product effective for outdoor use?

Yes, the zinc content provides excellent weather resistance and is specifically formulated for outdoor metal structures.

How many coats should I apply?

For maximum protection, apply two thin coats, allowing for a few minutes of drying time in between.

Does this work on rusted surfaces?

It is best to remove loose rust before application, as the primer adheres best to clean or lightly sanded metal.

What is the primary use for the weld-through feature?

It is intended for fabricators who need to protect steel joints from corrosion before and during the welding process.

Troubleshooting

Spray nozzle clogging

Invert the can and spray briefly to clear the dip tube, or remove the nozzle and soak it in paint thinner.

Poor adhesion to the metal surface

Ensure all oil, grease, and loose rust have been removed with a wire brush or solvent cleaner prior to application.

Dripping or running during application

Apply thinner, multiple coats rather than one heavy layer to prevent sagging.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Excellent rust and corrosion prevention
  • Suitable for welding applications without removal
  • Provides a smooth, consistent finish
  • Fast-drying formula increases workflow efficiency
  • Professional-grade adhesion to bare metal

Cons

  • Requires thorough surface preparation for best results
  • Available in one specific colour shade (Beige)
  • Not suitable for use on non-metallic surfaces
  • Aerosol requires proper ventilation during use

Setup, Compatibility & Care

Before use, shake the canister vigorously for at least two minutes to ensure the zinc particles are properly mixed. The ambient temperature should be between 15°C and 25°C for the best flow. Apply in thin, even coats from a distance of approximately 20-30cm. Compatibility is excellent with most bare metal substrates, including steel and iron, but it is not intended for use over plastic or wood. To maintain the canister, always invert the can and spray for 2-3 seconds after every use to prevent the nozzle from clogging with zinc pigments.
