FAQs

Can I use this set to cut new threads in raw material?

No, this set is designed as a thread chaser kit for cleaning and restoring existing, damaged threads. It is not intended for cutting threads into unthreaded stock.

What does the color coding represent?

Silver is for UNC, black is for UNF, and gold represents Metric threads.

Do the thread files come with protection?

Yes, each thread file includes a removable protective cover to keep the cutting edges sharp and safe during storage.

Is this kit suitable for high-tensile steel bolts?

Yes, the tools are rated at HRC 55-62 hardness, making them suitable for cleaning threads on most standard automotive steel fasteners.

How should I clean the tools after use?

Use a soft brush or compressed air to remove metal debris, then wipe down with a clean cloth and a light layer of machine oil.

Troubleshooting

Tool feels tight while entering the hole

Do not force it; back the tool out, clear any metal debris, add fresh lubricant, and attempt to re-align.

Difficulty identifying the thread pitch

Use a thread pitch gauge to confirm the TPI (threads per inch) or pitch in millimeters before selecting the tap or die.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Extensive coverage of UNC, UNF, and Metric thread sizes
  • High hardness rating ensures long tool life
  • Easy-to-follow color-coding system reduces errors
  • Includes thread files for specialized restoration tasks
  • Robust storage case for easy transport

Cons

  • Designed for chasing existing threads, not cutting new ones
  • Requires proper alignment skill to avoid cross-threading
  • Case latches may require careful handling over time

Setup, Compatibility & Care

To begin using the set, verify the pitch and size of your fastener using a thread pitch gauge if you are uncertain. Select the corresponding chaser from the kit based on the color-coded standards (Silver: UNC, Black: UNF, Gold: Metric).

Care Instructions:

  • Always apply a light coat of cutting oil or lubricant before inserting a tap into a hole to reduce friction and heat.
  • Wipe all tools clean with a shop rag after use to remove metal shavings and debris.
  • Re-apply a light layer of rust-preventative oil before storing the tools in the provided case.
  • Ensure the thread file covers are snapped securely into place when not in use to protect the precision-ground edges.
