Setup, Compatibility & Care
Setup
Upon receiving your 9cm potted plant, prepare a planting site that receives full sun. If planting in the ground, dig a hole twice as wide as the pot and to the same depth. If planting in a container, choose a pot at least 45-60cm in diameter with good drainage. Remove the plant gently from its pot, loosen any circling roots, and place it in the prepared hole or container, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface. Backfill with good quality compost, firm gently, and water thoroughly.
Compatibility
This mini apple tree thrives in full sun. For optimal fruit production, it is highly recommended to plant it with another apple tree variety for cross-pollination. This could be another Braeburn (if self-fertile varieties are different clones) or a different compatible apple variety. Ensure adequate spacing if planting multiple trees, allowing for air circulation.
Care
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry spells and when the tree is fruiting. Avoid waterlogging.
- Feeding: Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth and fruit development.
- Pruning: Minimal pruning may be required to maintain shape and remove any dead or diseased branches. Consult a basic fruit tree pruning guide for best practices tailored to apple trees.
- Pest and Disease Monitoring: Regularly inspect your plant for common apple pests (e.g., aphids, codling moth) and diseases (e.g., apple scab, powdery mildew) and address them promptly using appropriate organic or chemical treatments.
