Setup, Compatibility & Care
Proper setup, ensuring compatibility with other materials, and routine care will extend the life and appearance of your Metsä Wood timber projects.
Setup
- Inspect Timber: Before starting, check the timber for any imperfections, knots, or damage. Plan your cuts to utilize the best sections.
- Prepare Workspace: Set up a clean, well-lit, and stable workspace. Ensure you have all necessary tools: measuring tape, pencil, saw, clamps, drill, fasteners, and safety gear (gloves, eye protection).
- Accurate Measurement: "Measure twice, cut once" is crucial. Mark all cuts clearly and accurately before cutting.
- Secure Cutting: Always secure the timber with clamps before cutting to prevent movement and ensure safety and precision.
Compatibility
- Fasteners: Compatible with standard wood screws, nails, and various timber connectors. Choose lengths appropriate for the timber's thickness (34mm).
- Adhesives: Works well with most wood glues (PVA wood glue, polyurethane glue, epoxy) for strong, permanent bonds.
- Finishes: Its natural spruce surface is highly compatible with paints, wood stains, varnishes, lacquers, and wood oils. Always perform a patch test on a scrap piece first.
- Other Timbers: Can be combined with other timber types, plywood, or MDF in multi-material projects. Ensure dimensional consistency for seamless joints.
Care & Maintenance
- Storage: Store any unused timber in a dry, well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and moisture to prevent warping, twisting, or mold growth.
- Cleaning: For finished projects, wipe clean with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners that could damage the finish.
- Indoor Use: This timber is intended for indoor use. If planning to use it in areas with high humidity or occasional moisture exposure (like a bathroom), apply a suitable waterproof sealant or finish.
- Outdoor Use (with treatment): While not pre-treated for outdoor conditions, it can be used outside if thoroughly treated with a high-quality exterior wood preservative, stain, or paint designed to protect against moisture, UV radiation, and fungal decay. Reapply treatments as recommended by the product manufacturer.
