The annual or biennial herbaceous perennial grows to a height of 10 to 50 cm and shows its pretty white flowers from March to November. Already in the Middle Ages, the shepherd's purse was valued by monastic medicine as a hemostatic. Unfortunately, it is known to many only as a weed and therefore almost forgotten as a medicinal herb. The Swedish naturalist Carl von Linné gave the plant its botanical name because of the peculiar shape of the seed capsules, which reminded him of the typical shape of the shepherd's bag: "Capsella" means capsule, "bursa" the bag or purse and "pastoris" is the shepherd. The exact origin of the shepherd's purse is still unknown today. It probably comes from the countries of West Asia and Southern Europe. Today, the plant is widespread worldwide. It is best to sow the shepherd's purse in spring. Since it is a light germinator, you should only lightly press the small seeds onto the moist growing medium. Make sure that the substrate is supplied with water evenly during the germination phase. Any sunny or at least partially shady location is suitable for growing. The shepherd's purse does not require any special care. It is best to harvest the whole plant including the roots. Remove any adhering soil and either hang the bundle upside down in a well-ventilated place or dry the herb in the oven at no more than 35° Celsius with the oven door slightly open. It is best to sow new seeds the following year.
