Product Information

Full details

The SmallRig RA-D55 Parabolic Softbox is an ideal lighting modifier for portrait photographers, videographers, and content creators who require professional-grade, soft, and flattering illumination. Its primary benefit is the innovative quick-release mechanism that enables assembly in under 15 seconds, making it perfect for fast-paced studio or on-location environments. One caveat to keep in mind is that at 21.6 inches in diameter, it is best suited for medium-close shots and may not provide wide-angle coverage for large group setups.

FAQs

Can I use this with non-SmallRig lights?

Yes, as long as your light has a standard Bowens mount, this softbox will fit perfectly.

Does it come with a grid?

Yes, a 45-degree honeycomb grid is included in the package to help with light directionality.

How long does it take to assemble?

The quick-release design allows for setup or breakdown in approximately 15 seconds.

Is it suitable for outdoor use?

Yes, the rugged Oxford fabric and durable ribs are designed to handle various environments, though you should always use sandbags on your light stand for wind protection.

Are the diffusion cloths washable?

You can hand wash the diffusion cloths with mild detergent. Ensure they are completely dry before storing them in the bag to prevent mold.

Troubleshooting

Ribs failing to lock into place

Ensure the center mechanism is pressed fully until it clicks; clear any fabric that may be caught in the locking joint.

Softbox feels loose on the light mount

Verify that the Bowens mount tabs are fully rotated and locked into the slots of your light fixture.

Light spill is too wide

Attach the included 45-degree honeycomb grid to narrow the beam and control the spread.

Requires careful storage in the provided bag to maintain the rib structure

Setup, Compatibility & Care

Setup: To assemble, ensure the Bowens mount is clear of obstructions. Use the press-and-lift mechanism to snap the ribs into place until you hear them lock. Always ensure the light fixture is off before attaching the softbox.

Compatibility: This unit uses a standard Bowens mount. It is fully compatible with the SmallRig RC 120D, RC 120B, RC 220D, and RC 220B, along with most other popular Bowens-compatible studio strobes and COB lights.

Care: Store the unit in its included carrying bag when not in use. Avoid folding the softbox while the ribs are under tension. If the diffusion cloths become dusty, gently hand-wash them with mild soap and air dry completely before re-attaching.
