FAQs

What is the primary advantage of the Spectra® Ripstop fabric?

The Spectra® Ripstop fabric offers exceptional strength-to-weight ratio and superior resistance to abrasion, tears, and UV exposure, making it ideal for rugged mountain environments.

How can I reduce the pack's weight for faster ascents?

Many features on the Latok 38L are detachable. You can remove the hip belt, lash straps, and potentially other accessories to tailor the pack's weight and rigidity to your specific needs.

Is the pack suitable for ski mountaineering?

Yes, the pack is well-equipped for ski mountaineering. It features lower compression straps that can be used for an A-frame ski carry and has durable fabric to withstand sharp ski edges.

What is the X-SHIELD™ back system?

The X-SHIELD™ back system is engineered to provide a snug fit against your back, offering unrestricted mobility. It features dual-density foam straps for flexibility and contoured padding for comfort.

How do I ensure the roll-top entry is weatherproof?

To ensure a weatherproof seal, roll the top of the pack down tightly at least three times before fastening the buckle securely. This creates a robust barrier against rain and snow.

What is the purpose of the sternum strap with a whistle?

The sternum strap helps stabilize the load and improves comfort. The integrated whistle is a safety feature, allowing you to attract attention in emergency situations.

What are the dimensions and weight of the pack?

The dimensions are 60 x 33 x 22cm, and the weight is approximately 0.86kg (1lb 14oz).

Troubleshooting

Pack feels unstable or shifts during movement.

Adjust the sternum strap and top tensioners to bring the load closer to your body. Ensure the hip belt (if attached) is properly fastened and snug. Check that heavy items are packed close to the back panel.

Water is seeping into the pack.

Ensure the roll-top closure is properly secured by rolling it tightly and fastening the buckle. Check the integrity of the HydroShield finish for any damage. Consider using dry bags for extra sensitive items.

Ice axe attachments are not secure.

Ensure the ice axe head is firmly seated in the HeadLocker™ and the lash strap is pulled taut. Verify that the lash strap is correctly routed through the appropriate gear loops.

Detachable components are difficult to remove or reattach.

Inspect buckles and straps for ice, dirt, or debris. Clean and dry components before attempting reattachment. Consult the product manual for specific instructions on removing and attaching components.

Setup, Compatibility & Care

Setup:

The Latok 38L is designed for immediate use, but customization for weight reduction is key. Identify detachable components such as the hip belt and lash straps. Attach ice axes to the HeadLocker™ attachments and secure them with the provided lash points. Use the daisy chain for additional items like carabiners or a first-aid kit. Adjust the sternum strap and top tensioners for a comfortable, stable fit.

Compatibility:

This pack is compatible with standard climbing and ski mountaineering equipment. The HeadLocker™ system is designed for most types of ice axes. The A-frame ski carry configuration accommodates most touring skis. Ensure that any additional gear attached externally does not impede movement or balance.

Care:

Cleaning: Clean the pack using a damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid harsh detergents or abrasive cleaners. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and allow to air dry completely, away from direct heat or sunlight.
Storage: Store the pack in a cool, dry place when not in use. Ensure it is clean and completely dry before long-term storage to prevent mildew.
Fabric Care: Inspect the Spectra® Ripstop fabric regularly for signs of wear. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight which can degrade materials over time.
