Setup, Compatibility & Care
Setup:
Plant Pontederia Cordata in pots filled with aquatic soil or directly into the substrate at the edge of a pond or water feature. It thrives in shallow water, ideally with the base of the plant submerged between 1-4 inches deep, or in consistently waterlogged soil.
Compatibility:
This plant is compatible with most pond fish and other marginal aquatic plants. It is ideal for creating naturalistic pond edges, bog gardens, and water gardens. Ensure it has adequate space to form its clump; avoid overcrowding with very vigorous spreaders.
Care:
- Watering: Keep consistently moist or submerged. It requires no special watering once established in its preferred wet environment.
- Sunlight: Prefers full sun to partial shade for best flowering.
- Fertilizing: Generally not required if planted in nutrient-rich pond substrate. Over-fertilization can lead to excessive algae growth.
- Pruning: Remove spent flower stalks if desired for aesthetic reasons. Trim back dead foliage in late autumn or early spring.
- Division: Mature clumps can be divided every few years in spring to manage size or propagate new plants.
